Larry L.'s Story

Life USAF 1959-1980, Daniel Webster College, 1984, BS in Computer Systems, Retired from Boeing after 18 years on the International Space Station program in California, Florida, and Houston, Texas. Married, 3 grown Children, 6 growing Grandchildren. Retired to Selma, TX July 2007. Selma is just off I-35 on the North side of San Antonio on what is known as the Austin Highway. Traveled a bit with our motor home, favorite location was Colorado Springs (Sep 2014-May 2015). Spent 3-months (Apr-Jun 2016) in Madrid, Spain living like a native and next taking another cruise. This time a round trip LA-Hawaiian Islands-LA cruise for 2-weeks in Feb 2017. Cruise was excellent. School Covina High School, as a Freshman, then on to Fresno High... Those years were a blur though many memories remain. I certainly wouldn't repeat some of the mistakes I made nor would I change some others. All in all my limited participation in sports and the math and sciences provided most inspiration. Didn't have any real crushes.. Think I overdid that aspect a bit. Should have toned that down a bit (Nah! Too much fun). Most long term life benefit came from an elderly typing teacher who forced me to learn to type and whom I'll always be greatful. Too many memories spoil the pie though I suppose the best was walking away at graduation and not looking back. College Attended Daniel Webster College (formerly New England Aeronautical Institute) where I obtained a BS in Computer Systems going full time nights while maintaining full time employment. New Hampshire was cold. Not even the heaters could warm up those desks in the winter! This college was small but offered a quiet environment with industry wise experienced professors. Workplace After the military I realized there was a real need for a BS degree and returned to school while working as an engineer assistant for the Mitre Corporation in Bedford, MA. After earning the BS, I was ...Expand for more
offered employment with McDonnell Douglas who later sold out to Boeing. I was with Boeing for over 20 years. Though the BS degree was in Computer Systems I worked in engineering almost the entire period. Career highlights were testing on the Northern Frontier (i.e. Cambridge Bay, Victoria Island, North Pole), and supported the launch of the Space Station from Russia's Moscow Launch Control Center. I worked on the Space Station program from 1989 until retirement in 2007. Locations on Space Station Program included Huntington Beach, CA; Merritt Island, FL; and Houston, TX. Boeing was my final employer. After retirement we moved to Selma, TX a small community outside San Antonio where we still reside today Jan 10, 2023. Military Joined USAF after summer of 1959. After Technical Training at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS I was assigned to the Philippines where I stayed until 1964 before going straight to Germany until 1968. Had to leave the Philippines when my name appeared as a write in candidate for mayor of Angeles City (outside Clark AFB, LOL). Returned to US for an 18 month assignment with the Tactical Air Command at Bergstrom AFB, Austin, Texas before returning to the Philippines to support the VietNam effort. Stayed there for 2 years, returned as an Electronics Instructor at the place where I started my Military Career, Keesler AFB, MS. After 4 years as an instructor an assignment took me to Izmir, Turkey for two years and then on to a stint as an Air Force Recruiter in Chicago. By the end of 1978 I returned to Keesler AFB where I retired in 1980. Those 20 years provided me many opportunities to enjoy the world and experience many cultures. I would do it all over again. Not sure how much I'd like to change. Retirement has provided a lot of time for reflection. I often visit school albums to tweak memories. As I look back I realize those were good times. In some aspects wasted times but never forgotten.
